Which browser should I use?

Mozilla Firefox is the recommended browser for using Moodle in both Mac and Windows environments. Mac Safari users will not see the formatting toolbar, and some Windows Internet Explorer users have reported problems when editing their profile. If you do not have Firefox installed, download it for free here: http://www.firefox.com/

The Shockwave player is not working on my Intel-based Macintosh computer. What can I do?

Shockwave Player has not yet been ported to run natively on the new Intel-based Macintosh computers and currently only runs in Rosetta emulation mode. To install and use Shockwave Player on an Intel-basedMacintosh, you will need to run the browser in Rosetta emulation mode. Follow the instructions below to launch your browser in Rosetta emulation mode.

Launching a Browser in Rosetta Emulation Mode
Applications like both Safari and Firefox default to running in native mode on the new Intel-based Macs and therefore you must follow a few simple steps to instead have then run in Rosetta emulation mode:

  1. Quit out of the browser.
  2. Go to your Applications folder and control-click on the browser application bundle.
  3. In the context menu that appears select Get Info.
  4. Under the General heading of the Info dialog select “Open using Rosetta“.
  5. Close the Info dialog box.

After completing the above steps the browser will now run in Rosetta emulation mode thus allowing you to install and use the Shockwave Player.

I’m having trouble logging in.

If you can’t log in to Moodle, it’s generally due to one of two things: either you’re not entering your username or password correctly, or your browser settings need to be changed. Make sure to do the following:

  • Enable cookies in your Browser:
    • For Windows Internet Explorer, go to Tools > Internet options > Privacy, and make sure the slider is set to Medium.
    • For Windows Firefox, the default settings should be fine.
    • For Macintosh Safari, go to Safari > Preferences > Security, and set Accept Cookies to either “Only from sites you navigate to” or “Always.”
    • For Macintosh Firefox, go to Firefox > Preferences > Privacy > Cookies, and make sure that “Allow sites to set Cookies” is checked.

If you need more assistance logging in, you can get help from the Technical Support team.

I cannot find a reply button in a Moodle forum. What should I do?

Please contact support.

I cannot bookmark the Moodle login page.

The best way to bookmark or add the Moodle login page as a favorite is to log in to Moodle first, using your preferred browser (for example Firefox or Internet Explorer) and your computer account username and password.

After that, go to the tool in your browser and set the page as a bookmark or favorite as you would any other page. The next time you use this bookmark or favorite, it will take you to the Moodle login page.

How do I change my profile.

Log in to Moodle and click on the link with your name (on most pages, look in the upper right-hand corner where it says “You are logged in as”), and on the next screen, select the “Edit profile” tab. Then, change whatever settings you like.

Note: Some settings (last name and first name) are locked and cannot be changed in Moodle. Contact the Registrar’s Office at registrar@cugn.org to change your postal address.

Adobe Acrobat is giving me trouble. What do I do?

Some Acrobat (pdf) versions of the course have large file sizes. Users on dial-up connections may assume that the file is not downloading when in fact it is still in process. Assuming that you do not have a firewall or pop up ad filter that is preventing the download, you will likely need to wait longer for the file to download. The pdf files may also be impacted by pop up ad filters and firewall settings (see Pop-up ad filters and firewalls).

If you have a hard time opening PDF files, try to right-click (option-click on a Mac), and choose “Save target as…” (Internet Explorer) or “Save Link As…” (Firefox) and save the PDF file to your computer. Then open the PDF file you saved to your computer to read the assignment.

What types of payments may I use?

You can pay online through PayPal by using these methods:

Bank Account: Checking or Savings Accounts

Debit or Credit Card

PayPal Balance

How do I check my grades?

You should click on Grades in the Administration block on the left side of the course to see your grades for the current course, provided that the instructor allowed viewing of grades in the course Settings. An email will be sent to you when a grade or comment is applied to your assignment submission or activity. Alternatively, you can also click on the Assignments or Quizzes link to see your grades for specific course grades once they have been submitted.
